Soduko was first published in 1979 by Dell Magazines. The game was originally called Number Place and appeared in the magazine Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games.

Soduko appeared in Japan in 1984 in the paper Monthly Nikolist. It was initially called Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru, but was later abbreviated to simply Soduko. Nikoli still holds the trademark for the name Soduko within Japan.

In 1997, a New Zealander named Wayne Gould started to develop a computer program to automatically produce soduko puzzles. He promoted Soduko in England and the Times newspaper carried a puzzle in it’s paper in November 2004. By mid-2005 soduko puzzles had been introduced into a number of British newspapers. The huge popularity of Soduko in British newspapers and internationally in 2005 has made it the fastest growing puzzle in the world.
